O município de Cacaulândia foi criado pela Lei Estadual nº 374, de 13 de fevereiro de 1992, desmembrado do município de Ariquemes.
O município tem uma área de 1.961,778 km2 e uma população estimada pelo IBGE em 6.414 habitantes, com densidade demográfica de 2,92 hab/km2. A sede do município está situada nas coordenadas geográficas de 10°20’21” de Latitude Sul, 62°53’43” de Longitude Oeste, em altitude de 205 metros, na Mesorregião Leste Rondoniense.
Cacaulândia teve como origem o NUAR implantado pelo Polonoroeste para assentamento de colonos voltados para o desenvolvimento de lavouras de cacau.
A evolução político-administrativa alinha-se às características inerentes de cada município. Fatores acerca da formação de cada municipalidade – criação, desmembramento, fusão e emancipação –, podem ser entendidos como vetores que apontam para a construção de aspectos futuros (atores e fatos) que poderão compor o histórico.
